CONSUMER TIPS

By Jason Walsh, BADJA President & Webmaster

There are many things you should keep in mind when you interview a disc jockeys for your event, this article will give you a few talking points to raise with your DJ before and after signing a contract.

Style:  One of the most important things your DJ will ask is, "what style deejay are you looking for?"  Do you want a DJ that is low-key and only makes necessary announcements while letting his or her music do the entertaining?  Or do you want a high-energy DJ that will lead line dances and offer party props?  Most clients have a good idea what they want their DJ to do, and also what they do not want their DJ to do, you should communicate your desired style to your entertainer before signing a contract, and confirm your preferences during a follow-up meeting.

Music Sections:  Similar to event style, it is important to communicate your musical tastes to your disc jockey.  You should feel free to make a list of "must play" and "don't play" songs, then a list of general songs you'd like to hear if possible.  However, you shouldn't "cramp" your deejay's musical talent too much.  Professional deejays have entertained at hundreds of events and have literally seen it all.  Just as with your other vendors, if you are hiring a professional for their skill and expertise you should also trust their judgment when it comes being able to mix your requests with other songs that will keep your dance floor packed all night.

Get A Contract:  It is important to receive a contract from your DJ that stipulates the terms of your entertainment, any penalty for cancellation or rescheduling of your event, and the designated DJ at your event.  Most companies will request a 25-50% deposit to secure your date and prevent cancellations.  Some companies will offer discounts for full, up-front payment of your balance.  If a contract term seems questionable, make sure you question it before you sign on the dotted line!

Keep in Touch:  It amazes me how many clients wait until the last minute to choose music for their event.  Most clients book their entertainment 8-10 months in advance of their event, then never contact their deejay again.  By 3-4 weeks before your wedding, if your DJ has not contacted you, don't feel shy about calling or emailing him or her to arrange a meeting or phone call to confirm your final details.  Good communications with your vendors will lead to a great event.
