We have been asked again to help out with MPT's fund drive on Monday, March 7th from 7:00PM to 11:00PM. We need to be at the MPT studios by 6:30PM, at the latest. This will replace our normal general meeting for March.

We will be given instructions on how to operate phones and take pledges. MPT will provide dinner for us.

We need a minimum of ten people and a maximum of 15. As this constitutes community service, I am sure we could get some students the confirmation letter they need for their communoty service requirement for graduation.

We have asked that we all wear the black BADJA polo shirts.

TOPIC: MARYLAND PUBLIC TELEVISION (MPT) FUNDRAISER

We have been asked if our DJ Association can help out again with MPT's fund drive on June 8th from 7:00 to 11:00PM. We need a minimum of 15 volunteers. Family members over 18 are invited.

If you haven't volunteered in the past, here's the details:

1. Brief training at MPT Studios. This lasts like 10 to 15 minutes.
2. MPT provides a catered dinner for us.
3. Then we go on air and take phone calls. Most of the time we are only on the phones for 5 to 10 minutes, then they go back to the program and we go into the break room.

Simple, right?
 
The program for June 8th is Great Performances: Pavarotti: A Voice for the Ages and Sing Out! Icons of Folk.

TOPIC: The Taxman Cometh! / The WOW Factor

Come find out more about the 2015 tax codes for your DJ business and how they affect you. Presentation given by our own BADJA treasurer and accountant, Cammie Adler of Adler Entertainment. After the presentation, a question and answer session will be taken. It's never to late to learn important tax advice and proper record keeping technique just in case an IRS audit occurs. Protect yourself and your business by following the correct procedures in filing your yearly taxes.

Also, how do you add that WOW factor? This will be an interactive, round table discussion of how you add WOW to the events you do. Bring your notepad and pencil and prepare to take notes on this lively discussion. We all have things we do to give our clients fun, excitement, and WOW. Here's a chance for you to share a few tips and tricks of the trade.

Where has DJing evolved from and where it's going.

We have invited Professor Matt Durington of Towson University to come and speak about the sub-culture of Disc Jockeying.

Professor Durington teaches Anthropology at Towson and a few years ago made a documentary about a record shop in Philadelphia. He will be speaking breifly about the story behind that record shop and the sub-culture of record collectors, such as some of us DJs.

He may also be bringing copies of his documentary to give out.

We will also be discussing other ideas that YOU, the members of BADJA, will be putting together for future meetings.

BADJA - Baltimore DJ Association - What it means to you and what you can do for it! We need members both present and past to please attend this important meeting and set the pace for BADJA in 2014. We will have a round-table discussion about BADJA and what members what to see in upcoming monthly meetings and the future. Who can step up and lead BADJA in positions for both President & Program Director for 2014. Other positons become available for nominations as board members move up in their current roles. Help keep BADJA growing in the coming years with even more new members! Your input is important.

X-Laser Co. - Will not be able to attend this meeting due to their upcoming trade show at LDI in Las Vegas. They do want to come demo their equipment line in the coming months. Hope to see everyone that is part of BADJA at this very important November 4th meeting. Thanks.

TOPIC: Virtual DJ, Video Interviews, X-Laser Company

1. Live video presentation of the workings of the DJ software: Virtual DJ. Various members will demonstrate some of the newest features of the latest release and how to run your show. Both audio and video mixing techniques. Q & A also part of the presentation.

2. Video interviews of some of the newest trends in DJing by some of the most famous DJ's traveling the world with their shows. I found this online and was quite impressed with what is happening in those circles. Various types of music are also discussed. Questions to follow and your thoughts.

3. X-Laser Company from Laurel, Md will be bringing a high end laser show to demo for us all to see. This is much more powerful laser system than any of the lasers we are currently using at our shows. Come see what the concert venues are using and how we can incororporate them in some of our shows. I talked with Dan and hopefully he can make it for this Monday or else next month.

Special Guest Speaker- Michael Washkevich Industry Factory Rep for QSC, Rane, Shure, & Chauvet Lighting. He also represents some other smaller specialty companies like travel case manufacturers. Don't miss this important meeting with a well seasoned facory rep!

Mike said he will speaking about QSC powered speakers, a new QSC power amplifier which is coming in Sept, new Shure wireless systems, and new Chauvet lighting products. He can answer questions about many other products as well.

Mike is traveling from Harrisburg, Pa and does cover our Md region so lets make him feel at home with our BADJA group.

TOPIC: DJ Gear & Adopt A Road:

Come join us for our monthly Baltimore Area DJ Association BADJA) meeting. This months topics include: Your DJ Rig and everything that you should be thinking about.

Topics to be discussed:
1. How do you transport your DJ console/rig and lighting to each event? How do you pack it safely in your vehicle?
2. What vehicle are you now using to get your gear to your events? Are you going larger or smaller?
3. How to do make sure your gear is insured while at the event and in transit? We will discuss some of the insurance options.
4. What security methods or devices do you use on your vehicle to protect your gear?
5. What happens if your gear is stolen? What backups do you have in place? Sorry to hear about Jaime's incident. Maybe he can share his situation and how he has managed.
6. What gear do you use to make life easier getting your rig into and out of events? What carts, custom bags, containers, straps, etc do you use that you can't do without? Share some good ideas with your DJ friends.
7. MVA - Specialized tags for our BADJA group. Are you intested in getting them for your vehicle? If we get enough interest we can create our own DJ association tag. Let us know.

Topic 2: "Adopt A Road" Program presentation with Jeannette Harris. I hear she is coming this time. We will learn what is involved in safely caring for our new road. Hope you can make it! Things are getting busy for all of us but meeting with our fellow DJ's is always enjoyable. See you next week.

TOPIC: Games & Dancers and Adopt-A-Road Program

Come Celebrate April Fool's Day with the BADJA gang!

1. Games & Dancers: Come learn from some of our own games specialists and dancers. What games work the best and get people involved. How to entertain your group through party games for groups and using specialty dance instructors. We will have a presentation on how to perform these group games for Bar Mitzvahs, Corporate Team Building Events or School dances. Plus how to teach group dances with the use of professional dance instructors.

2. Presentation: Adopt A Road Program: Jannette Harris will give us an instructional presentation on how to properly maintain our roadway section and do it safely. Let's get some work related pictures cleaning our section of the roadway in the coming weeks.

Bring some new DJ's to our monthly events and help us promote our group. Short notice this time but make sure to register online and announce you're coming! See you Monday night.

TOPIC: Adopt-A-Road Program & Client Closing Strategies

1. Jeannette Harris from the "Adopt-A-Road Program" will give our members a training in what's required for us to fulfill our obligations in properly maintaining our section of the roadway on Cromwell Bridge Road in Towson, Md. Our signs are already displayed on both sides of the road. Now we need to keep that section of road beautiful!

2. How do you close those various types of clients and book the event? We will have some of our BADJA members discuss some of their own techniques in closing the deal. Everything from booking weddings, school dances, corporate events, reunions and Bar & Bat Mitzvahs. We will also end with a general round table discussion on this topic as well for all members to add what works best for them.

Winner of DJ of The Year Award at the International DJ Expo in Atlantic City. First DJ in Maryland to ever receive this award: Steve Moody of Steve Moody's Entertainment Connection Steve gave us a few topics for discussion and we choose: How Steve runs his DJ business and manages his DJ website which brings in most of his work. This is a 1 hour presentation that he gives to various Chamber of Commerce groups. Don't miss this one.

TOPIC: DMX Lighting

Still wondering how to connect all those DMX controllable lights and make them even more spectacular! Come to this meeting and find out how to accomplish this from one of our most experienced and knowledgeable BADJA members, who is also Mobile Beat's equipment "Gear Guru" since 1996.

Presentor: Nick Burke of "Nicky-B Entertainment". He is also the moderator on Mobile Beat Magazine's DJ Equipment & Lighting chat board answering questions from DJ's all around the world.

Topic: DMX lighting controllers and software applications to create custom lighting solutions. Nick will go into details in how to asccomplish this task and explain all the various controllers on the market and how they differ. This includes the American DJ DMX Operator, the Chauvet Obey series, Elation DMX Operator 192, Meteor 192 and a bunch of other import models. He will bring a generic 192 channel DMX controller and explain how this all happens. Come see and learn from the pro! He will also go into the software driven side of lighting control vs. the hardware side. Which is best for your style of DJ'ing. What makes your life more easier during an event, when there is a lot of lighting requirements.

1st Presentor: Jose Castro - Owner Avalon Entertainment - Topic: Keys to a great Business Card. Your business card is one of the first and maybe only direct marketing piece that a potential client will ever see. What does your business card message convey to a prospect? What are some of the mistakes that DJ's make in designing, printing and the distribution of their cards.

We all have have that one thing that makes the experience easier when performing or during setup that we must have. Bring it if you can to show or just tells us about it. You would be surprised what gets mentioned.

TOPIC: Pricing for Professional MC/DJ Services

We will conduct a open guided round table discussion about how DJ's establish their rates and what goes into calculating those rates. Do you charge extra fees for those larger events that require more equipment such as a bi-amp setup with bass cabinets or multiple powered speakers and truss lighting? Does the type of event demand another type of fee? How do you incorporate offering music videos into your pricing structure and has it paid off? Do you take into account the higher fuel costs in traveling to those more distant events? There are many sides of this issue that we can discuss so I hope we can count on you to attend and share your experiences with our BADJA group. How much is your time and years of professional MC/ DJ services worth?

TOPIC: Want to find out what's the best way to entertain various age students at those school dances? We will show you the differences. Also, discuss new lighting options that are available for DJ's in performing at those school dances and proms. You won't want to miss this meeting if these are areas you want to improve upon.

2. One of our very own, DJ Chris Hart, is going to kick off the night with a live performance, demonstrating some segues, mixes, and dancefloor fillers. He's then going to open up a round-table discussion amongst the members, inviting them to either perform ideas of their own (live), or talk about ideas that they use at various gigs.

Our October meeting is approaching fast! 
For the month of October, we're going to have the following presentations: 

1.  Kicking off the night will be our monthly BADJA spotlight DJ, letting us know a little more about who they are, how they got started, and where they're heading. 

2.  Our resident DJ, Jason Walsh is going to be presenting his legal knowledge to the group and how it applies to the Entertainment industry.  We've had Jason present such topics in the past, but this time he's going to zero in on contracts, marketing, & web pressence, and things we want to look out for.  He's also going to present some recent litigation that's taken place with companies and give an example of things to be aware of.  All good stuff! 

3.  Lastly, we're going to try to bring Scott Furman, from the Tuxedo House, in again to re-introduce himself.  He was unable to make our program earlier in the year, but we're trying to get him in for October.  Many of us use him for all of our formal attire needs and he's always been an outstanding local vendor.

TOPIC: Blizzard Lighting products, Meta data, Post AC DJ Expo review.

First things first – Due to the Labor Day holidy, we will NOT be meeting on 9/6, and instead will be meeting on 9/13!!! 

Now for our September programs: 

1.  Kicking off the night will be our monthly spotlight DJ – Escapsist Entertainment (Mark Ricche & Jordan Rich) letting us know a little more about who they are, how they got started, and where they're heading. 

2.  LIGHTS, LIGHTS, LIGHTS!  For those who missed the Mobile Beat Tour, lighting seems to be making a come-back, and especially wedding lighting; becoming a pretty big buzz in our industry, with up-lighting, pin-spotting, floor washes, etc.  Lucky for us, we have Gerry (a local vendor) representing Blizzard Lighting that manufactures all of this type of lighting and he's going to bring it in to demonstrate for us.  He's come up with some special pricing for BADJA (9/13 ONLY), so check out www.blizzardlighting.com, and bring your check books! 

3.  Ever heard of the term – Metadata?  Maybe, maybe not... 
Essentially "data about data".  I am going to share exactly what it is, and go into detail about how important it is to understand for all of us DJs/VJs that are using software-based setups, MP3/4's, and Video files when it comes to tagging our media & managing our software music libraries.  I am also going to share some personal experience in not understanding how important this is, and how it can really hurt you when modifying your library or moving to another software platforms.
 
4.  Lastly, wrapping up the evening will be a 2010 DJ Times Expo recap presented by our president, Jose Castro.

Presented by: Chuck Levin's Washington Music Center and Escapist Entertainment.

We've got all kinds of new stuff for August!

1. In case you weren't informed or didn't hear, Damon's in Hunt Vally has officially gone out of business (found out with the doors closed/locked in July). So, we will be moving our General Meetings to a new spot, and the new spot is Hightopps Backstage Grille , which is located at 2306 York Road, Lutherville, MD 21093. It's right off of exit 16A on I-83. We will continue to have our networking session between 6:00pm – 7:00pm, then our Monthly Spotlight Interview between 6:45pm – 7:00pm, and lastly we'll then have our monthly seminars between 7:00pm – 8:00pm.

2. I've reached out to Randy White, from Chuck Levin's Washington Music Center, to come chat with us. Randy is 'one of us', not only as a DJ but also as a huge music fan! Many of us purchase equipment from him, and he always makes sure we're taken care of. Randy is going to come in to talk about the upcoming 2010 DJ Times Expo in Atlantic City (Aug 16-19th), and may even have some FREE passes to raffle of with our 50/50. He's also going to come and briefly talk to us about the wireless 700 Mhz topic and things that we all need to know and be aware of. Lastly, he's going to come and talk about his services at Washington Music Center and what he can do to help us with equipment needs, etc.

3. Since we had a venue snafu last month and had to shuffle some program plans around, we're going to have two of our own, Mark & Jordan, come in again and present brand new games to us all. They are both going to come in a shed some light on some new and extemely helpful games that we may be able to use to spice up our gigs. These are always extremely helpful not only as a possible upsell, but also as something in your back pocket to use as an interactive tool to "wow" your client. This is going to be fun; you don't want to miss this one!!!

Some of you may know him, some of you may not, but for April we're going to be bringing in Scott Furman from the Tuxedo House (www.tuxedohouse.com) to introduce himself and let you all know what his company can offer in regards to all types of formal wear, etc.  A lot of us have used him in the past, and continue to use him, to purchase tuxedo's and other formal wear, and he is a great guy to work with!

Also on the agenda, Jose Castro is going to address the membership and let us all know, as President, where he envisions BADJA heading and where he plans on taking the organization.  Jose has been with BADJA for a very long time, and this is a great opportunity to understand where he sees BADJA in the near future!

Lastly, we're going to bring in a professional photographer to take the 2010 BADJA group photo, as well as give you all the opportunity to get head-shots, as well as personal photos FOR FREE!  This is the opportunity for you all to wear your formal wear (tuxedo or suits) and receive photos that you can use for various promotional material. 

AGAIN PLEASE BRING / WEAR YOUR FORMAL ATTIRE TO THE MEETING.  The last thing we want is to have a group photo and have someone stand out because they didn't follow directions.
